🥧 Step 1: Imaging the Raspberry Pi OS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC

 Download the Raspberry OS Imager software. Select Download for macOS.

📥 Download the ROBOTCAR.ZIP file.

🧰 Insert your microSD card into the card reader and insert it into the USB slot of your computer.

⚠️ Your Mac may not have a USB port. See Troubleshooting below.

💻 Open the Raspberry Pi Imager program and allow it to make changes to your computer.

🖱️ For the Operating System → Click CHOOSE OS and select Use custom.

🖱️ Select robotcar.zip from your downloads.

🖱️ For the Storage → Click CHOOSE STORAGE and select your storage device (this will be your microSD card in the reader and will show something like the image below).

⌨️ Open Advanced Options by typing CTRL+SHIFT+X.

🖱️ Under Image customization options, select for this session only.

☑️ Check the box for Set hostname.

⌨️ Type the hostname as robotcar (all lowercase).

⚠️ If you are in a classroom, ask your teacher for your car's hostname (check for a label on the car). Yours may be robotcar1 or robotcar2 for example.

☑️ Check the box for Enable SSH.

🔘 Select Use password authentication.

⌨️ Type the password as raspberry (all lower case).

☑️ Check the box for Configure wifi.

⌨️ For SSID: type in your WiFi Network Name (punctuation, spaces, and capitalization must match).

⚠️ If you are in a classroom, ask your teacher for the router's WiFi name.

⌨️ For Password: type in your WiFi password (punctuation, spaces, and capitalization must match).

🖱️ In the Wifi country dropdown, select US.

☑️ Check the box for Play sound when finished.

☑️ Check the box for Eject media when finished.

💾 Click SAVE.

🖱️ Click WRITE to etch the Raspberry Pi OS to your microSD card.

 When finished, remove the device from your computer and insert the microSD card into the slot of the Raspberry Pi board on your robot car.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHROMEBOOK | REQUIRES 8 GB OF FREE SPACE

Insert your microSD card into the card reader (or directly into the laptop if you have a version that supports it) and insert it into the USB slot of your computer.

 Download the ROBOTCAR.ZIP folder.

✔️ After downloading, check your Chromebook's storage to verify you have more than 6 GB of space left. If not, remove some files and/or apps to create space.

 Download the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension.

 Open the Chrome Recovery Extension in your Google Chrome browser.

 Click the settings icon in the top right and select Use local Image.

 Select the robotcar.zip file you downloaded.

FILE #1: SUPPLICANT FILE

Download the Text editor app.

 Open the Text app and create a new file.

 Copy the code below and paste it into your Text file.

 ssid="YOURS"

 psk="YOURS"

For ssid= replace YOURS with your WiFi name (keep the quote " " marks around your network name).

 If you are in a classroom, ask your teacher for the router's WiFi name.

For psk= replace YOURS with your WiFi password (keep the quote " " marks around your password).

 If you are in a classroom, ask your teacher for the router's WiFi name.

 Click Save as.

Rename the file to wpa_supplicant.conf (making sure there is no .txt extension at the end) and save it somewhere you can find it.

FILE #2: HOSTNAME FILE

 Open the Text app and create a new file. 

Type your car's hostname, which will be robotcar (making sure to keep it lowercase).

 If you are in a classroom, ask your teacher for your car's hostname (check for a label on the car). Yours may be robotcar1 or robotcar2 for example.

 Click Save as. 

Rename the file to hostname (making sure there is no .txt extension at the end) and save it somewhere you can find it.

FILE #3: HOSTS FILE

 Open the Text app and create a new file. 

 Copy the code below and paste it into your Text file.

ff02::2        ip6-allrouters

127.0.1.1    YOUR HOSTNAME HERE

Replace YOUR HOSTNAME HERE with robotcar (keeping it lowercase).

 If you are in a classroom, ask your teacher for your car's hostname (check for a label on the car). Yours may be robotcar1 or robotcar2 for example.

 Click Save as. 

Rename the file to hosts (making sure there is no .txt extension at the end) and save it somewhere you can find it.

 Open your Files app.

Click and drag all three files (wpa_supplicant.conf, hostname, hosts) into the boot directory on your microSD card.

 Click this button to safely eject your External Drive.

 When finished, remove the device from your computer and insert the microSD card into the slot of the Raspberry Pi board on your robot car.
