Lesson Activity - Measuring Voltage, Current, and Calculating Resistance

Grab your digital multimeter, screwdriver, wirecutter/stripper, both LEDs, a wire nut, and your WorkBench with Load Center. Follow along with the video to practice stripping individual wires, using the screwdriver to attaching a wire to the screw terminal, and connecting the LEDs in series and parallel, and using your digital multimeter to measure voltage and current in your circuits.

Your goal:

  • Strip ¼ inch of the insulation from the LED wires
  • Measure the voltage across the Load Center
  • Practice attaching the wires screw terminals on the Load Center
  • Create a Series Circuit with two LEDs and a wire nut
  • Measure the current through the series circuit
  • Use Ohm’s Law to calculate the resistance in the circuit
  • Create a Parallel Circuit with two LEDs
  • Measure the current through each LED in the circuit
  • Use Ohm’s Law to calculate the resistance in the circuit
  • Compare and contrast the two circuits
  • Once you feel comfortable with these skills, remove all connections and cut your cable clean to prepare for the next lesson!
