Three-way switches do not need to control a light at the end of a circuit, as we will do in Part 1 of the lesson activity. In Part 2, you will see how a light can be placed between two three-way switches as well as how a light can be placed between the service panel and the switches. This flexibility allows an electrician to wire a light and two three-way switches in whichever configuration that suits the job.
On a note: Some of the circuit diagrams have electrical tape on the neutral wires. The electrical tape is indicated in pink so they do not get confused with the black sheathed cable. The electrical tape is an indication that the neutral is sometimes hot. This can be a safety feature as well as a way to communicate with future electricians who may work on a circuit you have built!
