Smart Lighting Add-ons and Interfaces

Smart lighting systems can be as simple or as complex as a person chooses. Simple systems, like the switch to turn on and off a light, serve their purpose. But it could be better. Some lighting systems utilize motion-sensing technology (like PIR sensors) to turn lights on automatically when motion is sensed. Users could integrate a timer function as well, so a person walking to the kitchen at night is not blinded. Ambient light sensors can tell when the sun is rising or setting and automatically adjust indoor lighting accordingly.

Your phone can also be a sensor! Smart home systems often use cell phones and geofences as input to make decisions. If all of the users are away from home, the system could decide that a bedroom light left on could be an accident. Turning it off could be a way that the smart lighting system learns our behaviors, saves us money, and improves our experience.

Speaking of experience, the apps we use with the smart system have a large impact on how we use or interact with the system. Have you ever had an app that you hated to use? Apps are designed with a User Interface (UI) to make things simple and easy to use. When the app is intuitive and decreases your frustration, then it is said to have a positive User Experience (UX).

If you install smart home systems, it may be beneficial to try out many different smart systems (remember, keep your receipt and check return policies!). Being knowledgeable when consulting with a customer will help you say, “I like this system because of X, Y, and Z,” or “Stay away from this system because the hardware is good, but the app is poorly designed and frustrating to use.”
